Small install size you said?
Office software?

Maybe this can help : GDocsOpen - Double click and open document in Google Docs .

It is a small application, less than 1MB, which has an internal browser, connects to your Google Docs account, uploads the file there.

It saves locally AND on Google Docs! Give it a try.

@Parker - the French seem to be ahead of the curve on open source software. There was a story recently about how the French police saved millions of euros by switching to Ubuntu. OpenOffice works great but still needs some polishing, IMO. It'll get there, I'm sure, and weigh in at a fraction of MS Office.

Re: coming home, no immediate plans to resettle in the US. How about you?

Openoffice rocks and is widely used in France. Microsoft Office didn't even come free with my new dell and it takes way to much time to work.

Your posts rock. You coming home anytime soon?

@Rob - that's true without a doubt.

I just checked out your demo (with a web browser, not a mobile, but I get the idea). M-sites with Community Mobile is a very compelling project. Seems like a natural extension to integrate RSS feeds or IM with Jabber to the platform. We're working on an open source mobile/web project here that has good potential for integrating with your effort. I'm sure there's opportunities for us to collaborate in the future.

Good luck with the NetSquared & Berkeley challenges & thanks for the comment.

One of the key differences is that the Internet in Africa is going to be much more mobile orientated than the rest of the world.

Today I released the alpha version of the community mobile channels open source project - the release details are at http://mainstreamingict.org/?p=147

@Erik - absolutely! You’re not alone waiting for such a hub to achieve critical mass and become “the” place to go for African software entrepreneurs. Surely some preconditions (as Miquel noted) such as affordable broadband, reliable infrastructure, access to capital, etc. are part of the equation.

It’s exciting to see incubators backed with smart VC like Appfrica Labs getting rolling. Perhaps rather than a single hub, it’ll resemble a network of innovative centers around the continent. Cool to think about, whichever form it takes.

The question isn't “if” but “when” yes? :)

@Miquel – I really admire the work being done at Maneno, as you know. Amplify away, sir. ;)

@Mark – very glad to hear you say so. Speaking of good quotes, “Africa as the next home for advanced (through simplicity) software” is a sentiment that captures it quite well, I think.

Great piece Bill. I know I could share this with non-techies too and they'd get it. Brings together some fantastic quotes, too. Here's to Africa being the next home for advanced (through simplicity) software.

Cheers

Very true Erik. I'm curious as to which one it could be. Will it happy only once the low-orbit low-latency satellites are in orbit or will it be somewhere with established fiber?

Thanks for the link and including us in that group, Bill, and yes, I agree with Erik, great article. We'll definitely have to amplify this a bit more.

Excellent article Bill, I'm glad you opened up the comments.

As you know, I feel like we have advantages in Africa that aren't appreciated on the world stage just yet.

I'm waiting for a leading city to emerge within the app development space in Africa - a natural hub for tech-oriented entrepreneurs to descend upon. With enough critical mass, we could have a whole new world of software being developed, and some great companies growing and breathing new life into an economy.
