My friend, if you are there long enough, you would become a hybrid creature like some of us. When I visit Buea, people would call me "whiteman", not because I am white, but because my long stay in the US has affected my dress, my manners, my speech, my gaze, my carriage and my values. The stamp of the West has made my a "whiteman". By the same token, there is enough of the Buea boy remaining in me that I always remain the other, the foreigner to my colleagues in my adopted home in the United States. I am quite happy with all that, not fitting into any box.

You are quite an amazing fellow, my friend. Reading your blog is so inspirational. As for Cameroonian's asking you "tu m'as garder quoi?", you shouldn't take it literally. Its just a form of being pleasant and personal. Keep up the blog!!

well. from what you wrote i was thinking too. you cannot fully intergrate into the cameroon culture as well as i cannot fully integrate into the american culture. yes you like some aspects of it and will like to take it back with you. you cannot change your habits or your culture overnight but sometimes you need to adjust your habits to live in harmony with others. it's same thing over here. Also phrases as "bush faller" and "tu m'as garde quoi" does not only apply to you but to everybody. it's common that when you have left someplace for a short period of time, you think of bringing back something to those you care for. everybody says that so donot take it personally. it is against your principle but it is the cameroonian way of life. you just sometimes have to bend to their will

USA Cultural Acclimation 101
Multiple Choice Test

Eating with the left hand in Cameroon is the equivalent of:

a) NYC driver honking horn at the slow drivers in Seattle who don't use turn signals and don't know how to merge onto the highway.

b) After moving from Seattle to Austin, TX Fred was amazed at the fact that he received MANY invitations for BBQ's and other neighborhood events from strangers who were NOT crazy.

c) Walking to work in Los Angeles, CA.

d) Not recycling glass bottles in Seattle.

e) none of the above

f) all of the above
